This Week in Cybersecurity: Phishing, Ransomware, and a $32B Acquisition
Zero-Days, AI Threats & Rising Cyber Risks
Last week’s cybersecurity landscape highlighted the growing speed and sophistication of modern attacks. Multiple zero-day vulnerabilities were exploited in the wild, including flaws affecting Citrix NetScaler and FortiMail, while attackers continued to target widely deployed enterprise technologies such as SharePoint and WordPress.
AI is also changing both the offensive and defensive sides of cybersecurity, accelerating the security cycle and creating new risks around identity, data and AI infrastructure. At the same time, the UAE remains a major target for cyberattacks, while incidents such as the Bitget cryptocurrency theft demonstrate the wider impact of third-party vulnerabilities and the importance of cyber resilience.
Exploitation of Citrix NetScaler Zero-Day Hits Appliances Patched Days Earlier
Citrix NetScaler administrators scrambled over the weekend to protect their appliances after exploitation of a new zero-day vulnerability began.
Administrators initially reported reboots of fully patched NetScaler systems on Friday, and Citrix soon confirmed the existence of another zero-day exploited in the wild.
According to Citrix, the new vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-88779 and classified as high severity, is a memory overflow issue affecting NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway instances configured as a SAML SP or SAML IdP.
Fortinet warns that critical flaw in FortiMail is facing exploitation
Fortinet on Thursday warned of a critical path traversal vulnerability in Fortinet FortiMail, which has been exploited in the wild.
The zero-day vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-104286, allows an unauthenticated attacker to write arbitrary files on a system through the use of specially crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests.
Fortinet said it has been in touch with government authorities and other stakeholders regarding the threat, and urged customers to apply a workaround. The company did not say when a security patch would be available.
Fortra Patches Critical Vulnerabilities in BoKS
Fortra has released patches for eight vulnerabilities in Core Privileged Access Manager (BoKS), including three critical-severity bugs.
BoKS provides organizations with central management of Unix and Linux fleets, enabling policy enforcement and access control across accounts.
On Thursday, the company warned that BoKS Manager deployments relying on BoKS keytab for Active Directory service account management are affected by a critical flaw leading to authentication bypass.
Tracked as CVE-2026-79901 (CVSS score of 9.9), the issue exists because AD service account passwords are generated from a “predictable pseudo-random sequence seeded with the current Unix timestamp.”
SWIFT Banking & Government Middleware Enables RCE
Researchers have discovered a critical vulnerability in a hardware authentication program used to access highly sensitive global government and financial systems.
In cases where purely digital methods just aren't secure enough, especially careful organizations may require that users authenticate to sensitive systems with multifactor authentication (MFA) hardware.
Defending against AI-fueled cyberattacks requires focus on identity, data governance, Microsoft says
Microsoft’s report warns defenders that AI is upending the process of guarding against cyberattacks by “reshaping how vulnerabilities are identified, how attacks are developed, how defenders prioritize risk, and how organizations respond to emerging threats.”
The technology “has compressed the security cycle from days to minutes,” according to the report. “Its influence extends far beyond AI systems themselves and into the very fabric of our societies.”
GitLab Patches Critical 9.9 AI Gateway Flaw Allowing Command Execution on Self-Hosted Servers
A critical flaw in GitLab's AI Gateway could let a logged-in user with Duo Agent Platform access run commands on the gateway under certain conditions, GitLab said in an advisory.
The gateway is the service that connects a GitLab instance to AI models, and only organizations that host their own gateway need to act. The flaw is fixed in gateway versions 19.2.4, 19.3.2, and 19.4.1.
The flaw is tracked as CVE-2026-90970. GitLab disclosed it on October 2 and rated it critical, with a CVSS score of 9.9 out of 10.
Warlock Exploits SharePoint Flaws to Disable Security Tools and Deploy Ransomware
The suspected China-linked threat actor known as Warlock is still continuing to weaponize Microsoft SharePoint vulnerabilities, likely both old and new, in attacks targeting organizations in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries.
The activity, observed by the Symantec and Carbon Black Threat Hunter Team, has hit critical infrastructure, government, and education organizations.
WordPress Backdoor Rebuilds Itself After Cleanup Using Files, Database, and Shared Memory
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on a WordPress compromise in which threat actors deployed multiple persistence mechanisms to ensure that the final payload kept returning without having to infect the site again.
The backdoor has been codenamed SC after the "SC_" markers present in the injected content. Sucuri has described the malware as a "self-healing mesh" that's blockchain-controlled.
Bitget Confirms Third-Party Zero-Day Behind $387.5 Million Cryptocurrency Theft
Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget on Wednesday confirmed that attackers who stole $387.5 million last week exploited a zero-day flaw in third-party security products, citing ongoing investigation findings from SlowMist.
"Their investigation identified malicious activity involving third-party security products, including a zero-day vulnerability, and recovered a customized tool used by the attacker to initiate unauthorized withdrawals," Bitget said in a post on X.
UAE among top 12 targets for cyber threats, says Microsoft
The UAE is ranked sixth internationally as a target of cyber attacks in an analysis by Microsoft.
The US topped the rankings in Microsoft's Digital Defence Report, which monitored cyber crime activity affecting customers from January to June of this year.
Next came Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan, the UK and the UAE. India, Japan, Canada, Germany, Australia and the Philippines completed the top 12.
Why the CISO-CFO Relationship Is a Key to Cybersecurity Success
The relationship between the chief information security officer (CISO) and the chief financial officer (CFO) has evolved from a transactional, enterprise-budgetary conversation to a strategic alliance that shapes an organization's security posture and business resilience.
This transformation underscores the importance of a healthy relationship between CISOs and CFOs. It's not just about securing budget and optimizing security efforts; it's about determining whether security initiatives receive the necessary funding, executive support, and organizational alignment to succeed.
