This Week in Cybersecurity: Phishing, Ransomware, and a $32B Acquisition
AI-Driven Attacks, Critical Vulnerabilities and Growing Cyber Risks
Cybersecurity threats continue to evolve as AI accelerates the pace of attacks and transforms defensive capabilities. Last week’s developments highlighted the growing role of AI in national security, the expansion of advanced cyber defence tools, and the need for security teams to adapt to threats operating at machine speed. Meanwhile, vulnerabilities affecting critical infrastructure, domain services and trusted third-party platforms demonstrate how weaknesses in interconnected systems can have far-reaching consequences.
The UAE continues to face substantial cyber threat activity, while financial institutions and energy infrastructure remain exposed to complex risks. Alongside technology and infrastructure security, organizations must also address human behavior, social engineering and the effectiveness of security awareness programs. These developments reinforce the importance of a proactive, risk-based approach to cybersecurity.
Need for Speed: AI-Driven Attacks Are Changing Security Strategies
Concerns over AI-powered attacks are top of mind for organizations, as security teams race to keep up with threats operating at machine speed.
According to the latest Dark Reading readership poll, which inquired about themes from Black Hat USA 2026, the topic that mattered most for security teams was "AI-driven attacks vs. AI-powered defenses in the SOC [security operations center]," with 50% of respondents selecting it. A distant second with 22% was "Scaling SecOps with automation, validation, and trusted AI."
Anthropic Expands Access to Frontier Cyber AI Models
Applications for advanced artificial intelligence-powered cyber defense are now open to any organization, Anthropic said Tuesday, broadening access to its most capable tools as open-weight models narrow the gap.
Defence goes digital – data centres and AI on the frontline of national security
Artificial intelligence is playing a growing role in the defence sector. With commercial firms at the forefront of AI development, the lines between the public and private sectors are blurring.
Cybersecurity is being transformed, with AI handing new weapons to both attackers and defenders. The market for AI in cybersecurity is forecast to grow by almost 25% annually until 2033.
Citrix Patches Critical NetScaler Flaw That Could Enable RCE in SAML Deployments
Citrix has released patches for yet another critical security flaw impacting NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway that could result in remote code execution or denial-of-service (DoS) under certain conditions.
"CVE-2026-107406 is a memory overflow vulnerability that may lead to remote code execution or denial-of-service under specific configuration conditions," Citrix said.
Google Domains Impacted by Recent ccTLD Hijacks
Google has disclosed that several of its domains were affected by a recent hijack of third-party country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs).
The incident occurred last week and targeted the .gh (Ghana), .sl (Sierra Leone), and .as (American Samoa) ccTLDs, putting all domains with those suffixes at risk.
EU experts identify three major cybersecurity risks for internet-connected solar PV
The rapid expansion of solar power in Europe is also increasing the electricity system’s exposure to cybersecurity risks linked to internet-connected photovoltaic installations.
According to a new report from the Smart Energy Expert Group (SEEG) cybersecurity working group, EU photovoltaic capacity increased from 86 GW in 2015 to 406 GW in 2025 and could reach 718 GWdc by 2030. As more inverters and solar installations become remotely monitored, configured and updated, the risk of coordinated cyberattacks affecting large volumes of generation also increases.
Why Security Leaders Should Keep a Close Eye on “Trusted” Platforms
An attacker used a compromised Brevo Cloudflare API key to deploy a Cloudflare Worker that, for about five and a half hours, injected a malicious script into Brevo’s pages and into three JavaScript files customers embed on their own websites.
As the key carried full account permissions and was hard-coded into application source code, this allowed the attackers to create DNS records, workers and routes, all without triggering a single alert.
Security Awareness Training Isn’t Dead, but It Needs a Rethink
All enterprises conduct security awareness training for their employees. But whether this has tangible benefits is debatable.
Empirical evidence suggests that security awareness training isn’t working — successful attacks keep increasing. But opinions on the efficacy of awareness training range from it doesn’t work to it does work, with sometimes, perhaps and depends between the two extremes.
Awareness training focuses on two tasks: reducing the effect of poor judgment that could turn an employee into an insider threat, and helping employees resist malicious social engineering. The focus here is on social engineering.
The biggest threats to cybersecurity today, according to 5 experts
From apathy to advanced technology: the biggest risks facing cybersecurity today might not be what you think. As AI grows in reach and sophistication, human nature remains a constant. And as our data becomes increasingly valuable and voluminous, criminals are exploiting every angle to get their hands on it.
UAE faces over 800,000 cyberattacks daily: How the country is fighting back
The United Arab Emirates recorded more than 800,000 cyberattacks a day in recent months, according to the UAE Cyber Security Council, underscoring the growing scale of attempts to target and breach digital systems. The figures highlight the need for an advanced and resilient defence framework to protect critical national infrastructure and strengthen digital trust across society.
Cybersecurity and Fraud Top Risks for Banks and Insurance Companies
Cybersecurity, fraud and third-party exposure are among the most pressing risks facing banks, insurers and other financial institutions, even as organizations increase investment in risk management and artificial intelligence.
