This Week in Cybersecurity: Phishing, Ransomware, and a $32B Acquisition
AI Risks, Critical Vulnerabilities and Emerging Threats
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing both sides of the cybersecurity equation. Last week’s developments highlighted how AI is creating new attack vectors and operational risks, while also being developed and deployed as a tool for cyber defense. From AI agents and browser assistants to specialized cybersecurity models, the need for stronger controls, visibility and governance is becoming increasingly evident.
At the same time, traditional cybersecurity threats remain highly active. Critical vulnerabilities in widely used technologies are being exploited, organizations continue to face data breaches, and attackers are finding new ways to bypass established security controls. Here’s a look at the key cybersecurity developments from last week.
UAE's cyber blind spot isn't AI or the cloud, it's human error, experts warn
96% of UAE executives don't fully understand their AI dependencies across the web of vendors, models and infrastructure, while 74% struggle with data residency and sovereignty requirements when moving data across borders, according to a recent IBM study in the UAE.
The findings highlight that AI adoption introduces dependencies that extend beyond the technology itself. Organizations need visibility into the vendors, models, infrastructure and data flows supporting their AI environments, alongside appropriate controls for data residency and sovereignty.
Cybersecurity is the seatbelt for AI, say experts at GISEC 2026
A car without a seat belt can for sure drive fast, but the real question is- is it safe? The Cybersecurity experts at GISEC 2026, held at Dubai Expo city shared that view. Most organisations find themselves using AI today, accelerating hard with the safety systems yet to catch up.
UAE Cyber Security Council, Open Innovation AI launch specialised cybersecurity model
The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) and Open Innovation AI have launched a specialised artificial intelligence model for cybersecurity, developed collaboratively in the UAE to support cybersecurity professionals and organisations in addressing increasingly complex digital threats.
The model combines CSC’s cybersecurity expertise with Open Innovation AI’s engineering capabilities and is designed for applications including vulnerability analysis, secure code analysis and remediation, incident investigation, cyber-defence reasoning, security advisory analysis and support for cybersecurity operations.
The initiative supports the development of advanced UAE-based capabilities in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, while strengthening technological sovereignty, cyber resilience and control over sensitive technologies and data.
OpenAI Reveals Six Model Incidents Involving Hidden Failures and Unauthorized Uploads
OpenAI on Wednesday disclosed six new instances of "unexpected or concerning model behavior" that took place over the past six months, while sharing a new framework for reporting, tracking, investigating, and disclosing model misalignment in a bid to improve transparency.
The disclosure reflects the growing importance of structured processes for identifying and communicating unexpected AI behavior as models become more capable and increasingly integrated into real-world systems.
One Extension Could Hijack AI Assistants Across Chrome, Comet, Edge, Opera Neon and Claude
Security researchers at Forever Security have shown that one ordinary browser extension could take control of the AI assistants built into five Chromium-based products: Gemini Live in Chrome, Perplexity Comet, Microsoft Edge, Opera Neon and the Claude in Chrome extension.
The research highlights a growing security challenge for AI-enabled browsers: assistants that can access websites, accounts and other user resources can potentially inherit risks from the surrounding browser environment and its extensions.
AI Agent Breaches Spanish Organization, Modifies Personal Data
A Spanish organization has suffered a personal data breach at the hands of an agentic AI system (with human oversight).
On Sept. 14, Spain's Data Protection Agency (AEPD) — the Spanish government's data protection watchdog — described a breach report submitted by an unnamed organization, in which an unidentified hacker used a "well-known language model" to breach corporate personal data stores. Details are scarce, but the AI appears to have discovered and exploited a set of loose credentials, plus an enterprise application vulnerability, allowing its proprietor to modify personal data records and access corporate invoices.
Hugging Face Calls for Wider Access to AI Cyber Defenses
Organizations need more transparency and access to models and tools to fight against cyberattacks, according to Hugging Face.
Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said Wednesday that frontier labs should do more to help other AI companies defend against autonomous cyberattacks led by AI agents, including by providing more compute and information.
Cisco Secure Email Gateway Flaw Exploited in the Wild, Enables Root Command Execution
Cisco has warned that a new critical vulnerability impacting AsyncOS Software for Cisco Secure Email Gateway has come under active exploitation in the wild.
The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-76461, carries a CVSS score of 9.8 out of a maximum of 10.0. It has been described as a case of insufficient validation in the email parsing logic that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to run arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.
Malicious actors already using critical GitLab flaw, CISA and others warn
Hackers have begun exploiting a serious vulnerability in a popular software development tool, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is warning.
CISA on Friday listed the vulnerability in GitLab’s development platform in its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, giving federal agencies until Monday to mitigate the risks associated with the flaw.
The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-85706, involves a lack of authentication requirements and a lack of restrictions on where users can place files. Malicious actors could exploit the flaw to access files on GitLab servers without authorization. GitLab released a patch for the flaw on Sept. 10.
Check Point, Kaspersky, Tanium Patch Product Vulnerabilities
Cybersecurity firms Check Point, Kaspersky, and Tanium have each patched severe vulnerabilities in their products, including ones that can be exploited for remote code execution.
Check Point has informed customers about a critical vulnerability affecting Security Management and Log Server products.
The flaw, CVE-2026-91843, can be exploited by an unauthenticated attacker “to remotely execute arbitrary code with root privileges through the login process.”
Revolut Data Breach: 5 Months, 680 High-Profile Accounts, $3M Ransom
Hackers are demanding a $3 million ransom from the British fintech giant Revolut after siphoning data from it through fake government requests for five months.
Last week, the company notified potentially affected users that their personal information, passports, email addresses, phone numbers, and financial information were compromised in the data breach.
To obtain the information, the hackers posed as an official government agency. Because Revolut is required to respond to legal requests from law enforcement, it complied.
The incident demonstrates how attackers can exploit trusted processes and social engineering rather than relying solely on technical vulnerabilities to obtain sensitive information.
