This Week in Cybersecurity: Phishing, Ransomware, and a $32B Acquisition
AI-Driven Attacks, Critical Zero-Days and Internet-Wide Risks
Last week’s cybersecurity developments highlighted the scale and speed of emerging threats, with critical PHP vulnerabilities triggering urgent remediation efforts worldwide and millions of exploit attempts being reported. Zero-day exploitation targeting network management infrastructure and weaknesses in remote access configurations further demonstrate how quickly security gaps can become entry points for attackers.
Meanwhile, AI is reshaping both cyberattacks and the way organizations manage risk. Researchers uncovered ransomware operations using autonomous AI agents, while insurers are reassessing their approach to AI-related incidents. At the same time, identity weaknesses in software development and problems with digital certificates reinforce the importance of securing the underlying systems and trust mechanisms that businesses depend on.
Websites shut down globally after AI finds cybersecurity flaw affecting 70% of the internet
Governments and companies around the world are racing to fix vulnerabilities revealed by artificial intelligence that could affect 70% of the world’s websites.
Some websites and services briefly went dark after the set of vulnerabilities were announced Wednesday.
The US National Security Agency and Europe’s cybersecurity agency advised companies to take immediate action to address two critical flaws in PHP, a programming language that powers 70% of the world’s websites.
Millions of Exploit Attempts Logged Against PHP Servers
Attacks targeting the critical PHP vulnerabilities patched Wednesday are mounting as a flood of proof-of-concept exploits appear online.
Following a series of leaks, the PHP Foundation on Wednesday released patches for the two flaws, dubbed PHP2Shell, for all currently supported versions of its server-side code.
Attackers Exploit Third Arista VCO Zero-Day in Four Months
Networking solutions provider Arista Networks on Thursday rolled out patches for an exploited zero-day vulnerability in its centralized management tool VeloCloud Orchestrator (VCO).
The critical-severity security defect is tracked as CVE-2026-114625 (CVSS score of 9.9) and is described as a remotely exploitable SQL injection.
Exposed Infrastructure Reveals How Ransomware Affiliates Used AI Agents to Execute Intrusions
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven intrusion ecosystem run by affiliates of the INC and The Gentlemen ransomware groups.
Central to the operation is an "Autonomous Red Team Kill Chain Framework" referred to as Phantom. The threat actor is assessed to be Russian-speaking and functions both as an intrusion and data-extortion operator, as well as an infrastructure provider supporting different partners across the ransomware ecosystem.
As AI Risks Grow, Insurers Split on Covering the Damage
Following a rash of data breaches this year, several insurance companies have begun offering proactive policies related to artificial intelligence (AI) to cover enterprises that might be targets of unprovoked attacks or the source of attacks from AI agents going rogue. Meanwhile, other carriers are intentionally side-stepping this emerging risk, leaving enterprises to figure out how to manage it.
Insuring an enterprise against attacks from rogue AI agents that attack the enterprise, or perhaps those created within the enterprise that breach the corporate environment and attack third parties, is uncommon coverage. Many enterprises mistakenly believe their cyber and liability insurance policies cover AI-related risks.
Unpatched Tailscale SSH Flaws Could Let a Hacked Device Reach Root on Other Servers
A single hacked device on a Tailscale network can be used to gain root access to other servers it can reach, according to a security researcher who published the findings this week.
The attack requires two things: Tailscale SSH set up to allow port forwarding, and an attacker who already controls one device that the network's access rules permit to connect to the target.
The findings were published on October 25 in a report called Tailworm by Erica Windisch of Cyberdione Labs. Windisch tested Tailscale version 1.104.2 and headscale version 0.29.5, the self-hosted server some networks use to run Tailscale instead of the company's hosted service, over three days in a lab.
Weak encryption certificates could have let hackers easily spoof websites
An Indian company’s serious error in creating high-level encryption certificates has prompted major web browsers to block the certificates before hackers can use them to spoof websites.
The issue involves intermediate certificates created by the Indian firm eMudhra, a company with the authority to issue certificates that are trusted by Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and other browsers. Certificate issuers use intermediate certificates to “sign” individual website certificates that assure users of the sites’ legitimacy and security.
Close Identity Gaps in Software Development Before Unleashing AI
Artificial intelligence is complicating security in the software development life cycle, but a Dark Reading roundtable found collaboration, better identity visibility, and reduced testing costs offer CISOs a way ahead.
When Renee Guttmann ran her first Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) meeting in New York City in the early 2000s, the general sentiment among the industry and attendees was one of skepticism. Why on earth would anyone care about scanning Web applications for vulnerabilities?
