AI Coding Agents Found Triggering Endpoint Security Rules Built to Catch Attackers
Sophos analyzed a week of endpoint telemetry and found that AI coding assistants including Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenAI Codex routinely trigger security detections originally designed to identify malicious attackers. While the AI agents are not malicious, activities such as accessing browser credentials, querying Windows credential stores, downloading files with native tools, and modifying startup folders closely resemble attacker behavior, creating new operational challenges for security teams.
Businesses modernizing networks for AI fear expanding attack surface, limited visibility
Cisco's latest research shows that organizations accelerating AI adoption are increasingly concerned about the security implications of modernizing their networks. Nearly three-quarters of IT leaders cited expanded attack surfaces and increased cybersecurity risks as major drivers behind network modernization, highlighting the need for stronger visibility and AI-ready security architectures.
New “Bad Epoll” 0-Day Vulnerability Allows Root Access on Linux Servers and Android Devices
Researchers disclosed CVE-2026-46242, dubbed "Bad Epoll," a Linux kernel vulnerability that allows local attackers to escalate privileges to root by exploiting a race condition and use-after-free flaw within the kernel's epoll subsystem. The issue affects Linux servers, desktops, and Android devices.
Palo Alto Networks Patches 13 Vulnerabilities
Palo Alto Networks released security updates addressing 13 product-specific vulnerabilities, alongside hundreds of Chromium-related flaws affecting its Prisma browser. The most critical issue, CVE-2026-0288, involves multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities in PAN-OS that received the highest urgency rating, emphasizing the need for timely patching.
Microsoft Reins in RoguePlanet Zero-Day Threat
Microsoft released an out-of-band patch for CVE-2026-50656, known as RoguePlanet, a Windows Defender privilege escalation vulnerability. The flaw enables attackers with basic user access to obtain SYSTEM privileges, giving them complete control over affected devices following successful exploitation.
GodDamn Ransomware Uses PoisonX Driver to Disable Endpoint Defenses
Symantec researchers identified a new ransomware family called GodDamn that deploys the PoisonX kernel driver to disable security software before encryption. The ransomware is believed to be a rebrand of Beast ransomware, itself an evolution of the Monster ransomware family, highlighting the continued evolution of established ransomware operators.
New Ghost Phishing Wave Is Breaking Traditional Email Security
Researchers uncovered a new "ghost phishing" campaign that uses encrypted malicious pages which remain hidden until decrypted within a victim's browser. This technique allows phishing attacks to evade traditional URL scanning while targeting Microsoft 365 credentials and sensitive enterprise data.
Ransomware ecosystem grows, but ‘four-headed monster’ dominates
GuidePoint Security reported continued growth in ransomware activity during Q2 2026, with cybercriminals claiming 2,279 victims - a 43% increase compared to the same period last year. Researchers also observed the highest number of active ransomware groups on record, underscoring the increasingly competitive cybercrime ecosystem.
12 Million Impacted by Data Breach at Japanese Telco KDDI
KDDI confirmed that attackers exploited a zero-day vulnerability affecting email infrastructure shared by multiple internet service providers, exposing the email addresses of 12.2 million individuals and passwords belonging to 7.6 million users. The software vendor is currently working on a patch for the exploited vulnerability.
Accenture Leak Could Enable Follow-On Attacks, Researchers Warn
Following claims that 35GB of data was stolen from Accenture, researchers warned that exposed source code, Azure personal access tokens, storage keys, SSH keys, RSA encryption material, and configuration files could enable follow-on attacks. While Accenture stated there was no operational impact, the leaked assets present potential long-term security risks.
