This Week in Cybersecurity: Phishing, Ransomware, and a $32B Acquisition
Major Breaches, AI Security Risks and Escalating Cyberattacks
The past week brought significant developments across the cybersecurity landscape, from the release of powerful open-weight AI models and emerging AI-driven threats to major security incidents affecting cryptocurrency platforms and software development tools. These developments highlight the growing importance of securing digital infrastructure, protecting sensitive information and strengthening supply chain security.
Meanwhile, the sharp rise in DDoS activity, phishing campaigns bypassing established security tools and sophisticated attacks targeting enterprise firewalls demonstrate how threat actors continue to expand their capabilities. Here is a roundup of the key cybersecurity developments from last week.
Mistral releases weights for its trillion-parameter AI model, targeting cybersecurity
French AI company Mistral has released the weights for its trillion-parameter open-source AI model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), allowing businesses and governments to download and deploy the system themselves. Nicknamed “Le Chonk,” the model was first introduced earlier this month.
The release comes as competition between open-weight AI developers like Mistral and closed-model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic heats up, with the former arguing that businesses and governments should not have to rely on external AI companies to access advanced capabilities. This argument may carry particular weight in cybersecurity, where organizations seek greater control over their data and systems.
Chainalysis Confirms Intrusion Into Internal Tools and Exposure of Customer Identity Data
American blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis said it was the target of a cybersecurity incident in which an external actor accessed non-sensitive customer data.
However, the company noted that the breach did not result in unauthorized access to its investigation content, authentication credentials or session tokens.
Binance Suffers Security Breach Affecting $6.3 Billion in Assets, Nearly $3 Billion Frozen
Cryptocurrency giant Binance said on Thursday that a security incident on its platform had impacted approximately $6.3 billion worth of assets.
The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange said nearly $3 billion of those assets had been frozen on-chain so far.
Tether and Circle said they had frozen more than 1.567 billion USDT and 800 million USDC related to the incident, respectively. The Arbitrum Security Council is also reported to have executed a transaction to freeze approximately $30.5 million linked to the Binance exploit.
$2 Million+ Drained From Polymarket Traders in New Supply Chain Attack
Polymarket halted trading on its international platform on October 29 after users reported unauthorized withdrawals.
According to the prediction market's status page, the exchange was initially switched to cancel-only mode, with relayer actions suspended.
Anthropic-Themed Phishing Emails Bypass Top Security Tools
Attackers are managing to sneak low-grade phishing emails past established brand-name email security products, as demonstrated by a recent campaign impersonating Anthropic.
Described in a new blog post by Cofense, the campaign is relatively unsophisticated. Since September, an unidentified threat actor has been sending emails globally, pretending to offer early access to Anthropic's advanced artificial intelligence technology. The objective is to steal Google and Microsoft account credentials.
Cursor Confirms Anthropic Claude Code Extension Compromised
Attackers backdoored the official Claude Code VS Code extension distributed through the Cursor Marketplace.
The malicious version of the extension, which was available for 11 hours on Thursday, was designed to provide attackers with persistent SSH access to any endpoint where it had been installed.
San Francisco-based Cursor, owned by SpaceX subsidiary SpaceXAI, said in a security alert that the malicious version, 2.1.313, of the official Claude Code extension was available through the Cursor Marketplace from approximately 9:27 a.m. to 8:35 p.m. UTC on Thursday.
Palo Alto Networks firewalls compromised in chained attacks using PHP2Shell
A suspected China-nexus threat actor chained vulnerabilities in PHP2Shell with a Linux kernel privilege escalation flaw to gain root access to Palo Alto Networks firewalls, according to researchers at Dream and PAN Unit 42. The attacks affected more than two dozen targets, including multiple servers linked to the U.S. government.
The attack chain involved critical PHP vulnerabilities tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109169, along with a high-severity vulnerability in Fragnesia, tracked as CVE-2026-46300. Assisted by AI, the threat actor gained root access to 25 PAN-OS firewall and management servers across the U.S., Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.
Cloudflare Reports 18.2 Million Network-Layer DDoS Attacks in Q3, Up 38%
Threat actors are launching approximately 8,226 network-layer distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks every hour, Cloudflare revealed on Thursday.
The web infrastructure and security company said it autonomously mitigated 18.2 million network-layer (L3) DDoS attacks and 14.4 trillion HTTP DDoS requests during the third quarter of 2026. This equates to 197,400 attacks per day, or approximately one attack every 0.44 seconds.
In comparison, 13.2 million and 10.0 million L3 DDoS attacks were recorded in Q2 and Q1 2026, respectively. The increase has been linked to DDoS-for-hire booter and stresser services, which are responsible for hundreds of thousands of attacks.
